James Walby opened his butcher’s shop on the High Street in the late 1800s, having built up his knowledge and contacts as a buyer at Smithfield Market. He was the latest in a long line of Walby butchers over the centuries. Here you can see the shop at Christmas 1924, unconstrained by health & safety regulations. His carts were often seen delivering meat around the village, as in this image of the late 1920s. Walby’s continued running the shop till the 1970s, when it was bought by Tony Lutkin.
