The Bull Inn 1914
This is one pub you couldn’t visit after the lockdown. In fact, the Bull hasn’t opened its doors since 1919. As with so many Codicote pubs, early 20th century trade proved tough, and in 1919 the Bull was taken over by Greens Brewery … and promptly closed to kill competition for the premises that were to become ‘The New Bell’ in 1923. But where was the Bull?
The 2nd photo gives it away – this row includes Watson’s bakery, the Bull, a grocer’s (which became a wet fish shop), the Plough Inn and Robarts at the end of the row.
