Codicote’s got a new bakery on the High Street, a welcome addition, and the latest in a long tradition of village bakeries, stretching back centuries.  Here’s a picture of Jesse Watson with his bread cart in 1904, standing in front of Watson’s Bakery on the left (next to what is now the Peace Memorial Hall).  At that time many villagers took their own dough to be baked in its oven, six days a week.  The premises also ran a Coffee Tavern and Refreshment Room at that time, with an evening club for coffee and draughts.
